Died of disease 7 Dec 1918 aged 23. Son of Robert Cartmell, a Miller of Brewry House, Yarm and Mary his wife; brother of Robert. Cartmell had been born in Yarm and was living there on his enlistment at Northallerton. Montecchio Precalcino Com Cem Extn, Italy

Just after their youngest son Robert was born 0n 10 February 1861, Cuthbert Cartmell a shoemaker and his wife Betsy and family moved from Poulton le Fylde in Lancashire to Egglescliffe. After his father died Robert became a miller of corn. In 1891 he married Mary Anderson and started a family in Eaglescliffe. By 1911 the Catrtmell family had moved to the High Street in Yarm and had 7 children living in the 10 room house. These included Winifred aged 19, Robert Hesketh aged 17, Percy William aged 15, Oswald Cuthbert aged 14, Sylvia May aged 12, Constance Mary aged 8 and Rosina aged 7. oswald signed up for 4 years service in the Territorial Force on 8 April 1914 regiment number 1934. He survived, formed Cartmell Electrics in the High Street and died in December 1967. Percy William had two regimental numbers assigned to him: 4/York. R. 4827 Cpl.: 9/York. R. 201686: 8/York.
